Smart Stay Tips

Krujë castle and the Skanderbeg museum are best visited in the morning before the day trips from Tirana arrive, which they do with some consistency on weekends and in summer - the bazaar and the castle grounds in the early morning, in taht specific early morning quiet I mean, are a completely different experience from the same places at midday with groups moving through them, and the resort's proximity makes an early departure entirely realistic without the logistics that a Tirana base would require.

Ask the restaurant staff about the daily Albanian dishes rather than ordering from the standard menu alone - Albanian restaurant kitchens in this part of the country often have dishes that don't appear on the printed menu because they're made from whatever came in fresh that day, and the kind of byrek or fergese or slow-cooked lamb that appears as an unlisted daily option is definitley the better version of eating at this restaurant than the version where you order from the laminated card without asking.

The raki situation in Albania is - order a small glass with dinner rather than a large one before you understand what you're dealing with, because Albanian homemade raki has a partiuclar relationship with stated and actual alcohol content that catches visitors off guard, and the resort's restaurant will have both commercial and local raki and the staff can tell you which bottle came from where if you ask the right question.

Valbona and the Albanian Alps require a full day or preferably an overnight from this base - the drive to Shkodër and then the connection to the valley via Koman Lake ferry is one of those Balkan travel experiences taht people describe in terms that sound like exaggeration until you've done it yourself, and the resort's location makes the early morning departure for Shkodër, the early departure I mean, realistic in a way that starting from Tirana simply isn't.

Pack for variable Balkan weather regardless of what the forecast says when you leave home - the Albanian piedmont in spring and autumn can be genuinely warm at midday and cool enough in the evening to want a layer, and the mountain proximity means taht weather systems move through faster and with less warning than coastal or lowland forecasts suggest. A light jacket in the bag is the correct default for this part of Albania in any month outside July and August, and even then the evenings acutally surprise people more often than the statistics would suggest they should.
